It is more than an iconic building reshaping the downtown skyline.

Opening Fall 2011, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will provide our region with bold programming and performances, as well as innovative youth outreach and education programs.

To learn more about the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, please attend the Leawood Chamber of Commerce meeting on September 21, 2010 for an update given by Larry Kembell from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. He will bring you up to date on construction progress, funding, programming, and will share their exciting plans for the future.

Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

Board Elections for 2011 will also take place at this meeting, so Chamber members, make sure a representative from your company attends and votes. (Election notices will be sent to the voting representative for all member businesses)

St. Joseph Medical Center to Host Free Family Health Celebration September 25th

St. Joseph Medical Center will host a free Family Health Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 1-4 p.m., on the medical center campus at I-435 and State Line Road.

The community is invited to participate in a variety of free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, diabetes risk assessments, balance screenings, bone density heel screenings and more. Cholesterol and glucose screenings will also be available for a nominal fee to the first 150 people.

Community organizations will be on hand to provide wellness information, including the American Heart Association, Kansas City Cancer Center and the Lyme Disease Association of Greater Kansas City. Door to Door Organics will be distributing free, fresh organic produce.

Children can get in on the fun with activities such as a teddy bear and doll check-up clinic, fire truck tours, a moonwalk and obstacle course, face painting and a balloon artist.

Financing Local Government in Tough Economic Times

The Kansas Advisory Council on Intergovernmental Relations (KACIR) is holding two public forums this month to give local government officials as well as the public an opportunity to discuss financing for local governments.

Many local governments are trying to determine if there is a need for more or different revenue sources.  What happens to services to the public when more cuts are made?  KACIR members and other local officials will talk about cost savings ideas and other “out of the box” local government financing issues.
