It is more than an iconic building reshaping the downtown skyline.

Opening Fall 2011, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will provide our region with bold programming and performances, as well as innovative youth outreach and education programs.

To learn more about the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, please attend the Leawood Chamber of Commerce meeting on September 21, 2010 for an update given by Larry Kembell from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. He will bring you up to date on construction progress, funding, programming, and will share their exciting plans for the future.

Chamber Members: As an added benefit, members will receive via email a spreadsheet with contact information of all the other member attendees at the event. This is another way we're working to make sure the Leawood Chamber is a great networking resource for Chamber members.

Board Elections for 2011 will also take place at this meeting, so Chamber members, make sure a representative from your company attends and votes. (Election notices will be sent to the voting representative for all member businesses)

Jazz Concert Series

The Leawood Arts Council will host a free Jazz Concert Series each Sunday evening, August 22nd through September 5th. The concerts will be held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park located at 14701 Mission Road. All concerts will begin at 6:00 pm.

The final concert in this jazz series, on September 5th, will feature David Basse and OJT. For over twenty years David Basse has been at the forefront of Kansas City jazz. Basse is an acclaimed singer, musician and songwriter who performs around the country and internationally. He has recorded with many of the jazz greats including Phil Woods, Larry Bunker and Grammy nominated pianist, Mike Melvoin. Melvoin and Basse have collaborated since 1992. David also hosts the award winning Jazz Scene on Kansas Public Radio heard at 91.5 FM in the Kansas City Area.

David has been a resident of Leawood since 1998 and a favorite of this series in past years. “I love the rich heritage and vibrant jazz scene that the area has to offer” says Basse “after many years of traveling, this is home.” Audiences love that he performs in the park for free.

20th Annual Labor Day 5K Run & Walk

Entry forms are now available for the 20th Annual Labor Day 5K Run & Walk, presented by the Leawood Parks and Recreation Department and Pepsi-Cola. Whether you’re a walker, beginning runner, a veteran runner, or a wheelchair athlete, this event is for you!

Enjoy a morning run on Monday, September 6 at Leawood City Park, 10601 Lee Blvd. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. (wheelchair division) and 7:35 a.m. for all other participants. The closed course will begin and end at Leawood City Park in front of the tennis courts.

The first 500 participants will receive a “20th Labor Day 5K Run & Walk” commemorative t-shirt. Everyone who participates will receive post event snacks, a water bottle and a ticket to the pancake breakfast, provided by the Leawood Lions Club immediately following the event. Additional breakfast tickets for guests are available.

The last swim of the season goes to the dogs! Come down to the Leawood Aquatic Center (10601 Lee Blvd.) on Tuesday, September 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. for the 6th Annual Doggie Dunk.

Your dog will have a fantastic time enjoying yummy treats and posing for a photo opportunity with you to be posted on our website (free)! This will be a swimming party your dog won’t soon forget! For the safety of all participants dogs who do not play well with others should not attend. Please note that humans are NOT allowed to enter the pool during this event. Physician Joins Saint Joseph Medical Center

Jason S. Day, MD, recently joined the medical staff of St. Joseph Medical Center. Dr. Day, a board-certified neurologist, has a special interest in vascular/stroke neurology.

Dr. Day grew up in the Kansas City area and earned undergraduate degrees in music and chemistry from Washburn University in Topeka, and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and he is one of the first neurologists in the area to complete an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved vascular fellowship as is now required by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for subspecialty certification in vascular neurology.

Massage Envy - Massage for the Cure

Massage Envy is hosting Tuesday, September the 14th as a day to support the Susan G Komen Foundation.  They are accepting donations at their three clinics.  Every little bit helps. The funds that are collected and the proceeds of all massages performed that day will be allocated to the Kansas City Chapter.  Each clinic has local vendors, groups, and clients who have donated item(s) ex: theater tickets, restaurant gift cards, a night stay at the Great Wolf Lodge,  services for free carpet cleaning, etc... for a silent auction that will be on display at each location beginning Saturday, September the 4th and ending at 9:00pm on Wednesday September the 15th.

Local Hotel named “Best of MidAmerica”

The Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center was honored with a “2010 Best of MidAmerica” award by Meetings MidAmerica magazine.  This is the 5th consecutive year the Hotel has received the award.
