... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)A new neighborhood eatery named Lakeside Tavern is slated to open this October at the eastern end of Mission Farms in Leawood, Kansas. It will occupy the large space formerly home to the Mexican Cantina Los Cabos. This new venture is the latest effort from Joe Birch, who’s award winning concept Avenues Bistro has two successful locations; one in Brookside (Kansas City) and the other in Mission Farms. The latter, is within literal sight from the soon to emerge Lakeside Tavern.
A month of renovations will result in a unique establishment geared to appeal to a broad variety of customers by design and taste. The success of Birch’s restaurants can be historically attributed to his efforts showcasing inspired cuisine coupled with a focus on quality, freshness, and value. Fare at the
Lakeside Tavern will be broad, as the opening menu is to be more than fifty offerings. Bar staples like Cheese Fries are transformed into Kobe Chili Cheese Fries. Tator tots grow up when they are stuffed with Gruyere Cheese and Bacon. Authentic Pigs in a Blanket, Fried Green Tomato BLT’s along with numerous other sandwiches and fresh, unique salads highlight only a snippet of what’s to come. Beverages will match Lakeside’s ramped up tavern cuisine as twelve draft beers shall seasonally rotate. Additional bottled craft beers will further the choices with a focus on premium mixed drinks as well.

Kansas City Business Journal’s Best Places to Work have been narrowed to 30 area companies.
The awards program recognizes Kansas City-area companies that create workplaces that pass muster with the most knowledgeable judges — their employees. Companies are ranked based on the results of a confidential survey completed by a percentage of their work forces. The survey takes into account areas such as benefits, perks and interaction with management.
The top three winners in each category will be revealed at an awards luncheon Oct. 14 at the Sheraton Overland Park.
All of the honorees will be highlighted in a special section in the Oct. 21 edition of the Kansas City Business Journal.

Brandi Brown Palmer represents the new breed of breast cancer warrior. Determined, engaged, gut-level honest and relentless with a message of early identification of and intervention for breast cancer, the 42-year-old Overland Park mother of two has walked through what women fear: a breast cancer diagnosis. Palmer’s message of “Don’t Wait for the Lump” emphasizes the early detection philosophy of The Breast Center at Menorah Medical Center: No Excuses. Get Screened.
Brown will help The Breast Center at Menorah kick off its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 with a PINK celebration. The hospital’s Johnson County campus will be bathed in pink to bring awareness to early detection, and to honor those courageous women battling the disease and survivors.
The PINK party, which annually draws hundreds of women, will include Brown sharing her story and signing autographs; walk-in screening mammograms, the Bra Exhibit, free bra fittings, pink hair extensions, nail art and body massages. Pink ribbons will be given to every attendee, and the afternoon will conclude with a 5:45 p.m. balloon release in Menorah’s garden to remember those affected by breast cancer.
According to Pam Handlan, RT, Director of The Breast Center at Menorah, early detection of breast cancer is one of the most important tools in fighting the disease.

Menorah Medical Center is preparing to celebrate a milestone of delivering extraordinary healthcare in Johnson County and the Kansas City area and invites the community to join the party. The premier healthcare facility, part of HCA Midwest Health System—Kansas City’s largest healthcare network—marks its 80th year of serving the community and puts out the welcome mat from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011.
The festivities, which will take place on Menorah’s campus, will feature free activities for kids, including a petting zoo provided by Deanna Rose Farmstead, tours of an ambulance, fire truck and helicopter, a concert by Dino O’Dell, bounce houses and face painting. Adults will have access to free health screenings, including a heart disease risk assessment, blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index and bone density. And because no birthday celebration is complete without cake and ice cream, Menorah will serve up complimentary Blue Bell ice cream and cupcakes from Cupcake A La Mode to attendees.
Menorah Medical Center opened its doors in 1931 at the original location on Rockhill Road—a sparkling 97,980-square-foot facility, modern for the era that cost nearly $1.3 million, and had 167 physicians on staff. In 1938, rates for receiving care at Menorah reflected the period’s economy: a deluxe room cost $7 per day, a regular private room was $5 and a flat rate of $5 covered all laboratory tests.

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board announced that SAFEHOME will receive a $25,000 service-learning grant for “The Outrage”, an original performance piece that raises awareness and educates the Johnson County community about preventiing teen dating violence and sexual assault.
“The Outrage” is performed by trained teen volunteers, who are committed to respectful, healthy relationships in their own lives. SAFEHOME is one of 64 community organizations to receive a youth-led service-learning grant across the United States and Canada.
Founded in 1980, SAFEHOME has grown from a network of “safe homes” in the community to a 45-bed shelter and comprehensive service provider for victims of domestic violence. Services include: safe shelter, 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, child care, school and community education programs, Johnson County District Court and hospital advocacy, and civil legal assistance. All services are free and confidential. In 2010, SAFEHOME assisted more than 6,400 survivors of domestic violence.
“This generous grant will allow SAFEHOME to devote a full-time staff person to coordinate “The Outrage”, in order to meet the demand for performances for youth, parents, and other adults invested in the well-being of our youth. The Youth Advisory Board grant will also fund media promotions to boost teen awareness of the characteristics of healthy relationships,” said Susan Carman, SAFEH ...
