04/08/2013 – The Cancer Center will open in July 2013.
Merriam, Kan. – Long known as a leader in surgical and inpatient cancer care, Shawnee Mission Medical Center will open an outpatient Cancer Center in mid-2013 on the hospital's Merriam campus, conveniently located at I-35 and 75th Street.
The Cancer Center will offer a full array of oncology services, including medical oncology, infusion and radiation therapies, and other integrative treatments. In addition, the Center will offer a PET/CT scanner that provides advanced imaging and treatment planning.
The new Cancer Center will complement the hospital's current oncology offerings, which include an inpatient oncology department, surgical services and the first accredited Breast Center in Kansas City. Shawnee Mission Medical Center's oncology program is accredited with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
"Shawnee Mission Medical Center's physicians and staff diagnose more than 1,000 cases of cancer each year," said Ken Bacon, hospital President and CEO. "The Cancer Center will allow our community members to receive their full continuum of treatment close to home from the medical experts they've grown to trust for more than 50 years."
Two key Cancer Center personnel have already been hired, including Medical Oncologist Frank Slovick, MD, and Program Director Becca Bell, and additional oncology specialists will continue to be added. The Cancer Center will begin offering medical oncology and infusion services in July, with the remainder of the services being offered by December.
